About Mental Illness

A mental illness is a medical condition that disrupts a person’s thinking, feeling, mood, ability to relate to others and daily functioning.

What is Recovery?

Recovery from serious mental illness is not only possible, but for many people living with mental illness today, probable. The notion of recovery involves a variety of perspectives.

Welcome to National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Central Iowa!

Here at NAMI CI, our staff, volunteers and I have a passion for helping individuals living with a mental illness.  We also are passionate about helping their families and friends receive education, support and advocacy skills because, as we know, the illness affects everyone involved. At NAMI CI we strive to provide a safe, compassionate and knowledgeable atmosphere for the communities we serve.

One way we have managed to do this is through NAMI CI classes and support groups — facilitated by trained peers or family members who have a personal experience with mental health issues. I’m proud and extremely grateful for those volunteers who invest their time to help others to find coping skills, new resources and support.  Through these classes and support groups one finds help and hope.

Wellness centers play key roles in communities. Did you know the Ames Wellness Center has moved?  We are now at 424 5th Street in Ames (near City Hall) with our entrance on the east side of the building.  We now have a parking lot and are handicapped accessible.  Our Wellness Center hosts a number of activities. And with financial and volunteer help, I hope we can provide more wellness centers across the Central Iowa community to further expand our support to those who need it.

While we work to expand our wellness centers, we also will continue to advocate for a future where mental health is stigma-free.  Please take time right now to join the stigma free campaign by signing the online pledge.  Another way you can help is by becoming a member of NAMI CI.  Your membership is key to helping us share about our services. You will find our membership form on the bottom of every newsletter.

As the Executive Director of NAMI CI, I need YOU to help me reach out to our 11 counties to help reach those who need our resources.  I would be honored to speak about what we do and the services we offer.  If you belong to a club, a church, a school, a youth group, or even your place of work, I am here to be the voice for the voiceless and share help and hope!  Please contact me today!

Please know, it takes courage to reach out and ask for help for yourself or a family member. I have been there, and I know it is an extremely tough and emotional effort, but once you do reach out, you will be so very glad that you did!  There’s a community here for you, and we’re here to help you however you need it.
